This satellite aims to identify and examine interference that impacts global navigation satellite systems, such as GPS and Galileo. The company, established in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien, specializes in chemical propulsion systems designed for satellite maneuvering in orbit. For this project, GATE Space provides the propulsion technology, satellite structure, and thermal management solutions. The company has successfully conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under both atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Core Austrian Technologies Drive the Satellite Initiative
Several European firms contribute vital components to Austria’s first military satellite. Graz-based IGASPIN supplies high-precision technology capable of detecting and analyzing GNSS interference. Denmark’s Space Inventor provides additional satellite systems, including the onboard computer. The project integrates commercial space hardware with systems specifically developed for the BEACONSAT demonstration. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure also supports GATE Space through Austria Wirtschaftsservice with approximately 750,000 euros in funding.
Support and co-financing are provided by the European Space Agency via its ESA Marketplace program, designed for technology demonstrations. This initiative enables commercial space technologies to undergo testing for security-related applications. Austrian officials characterize BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than a fully operational satellite system. Its purpose is to gather information on orbit-based interference affecting satellite signals, which will inform the Defence Ministry’s efforts to develop military space capabilities.
BEACONSAT’s Role Within Austria’s Expanding Space Program
Austria’s Defence Ministry is creating a dedicated space services unit tasked with managing satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance. BEACONSAT is a key element of this developing structure, with a specific focus on navigation interference. The ministry’s military space strategy aims for the Austrian Armed Forces to shift from solely utilizing space services to actively operating space infrastructure and systems. This strategy, adopted in 2023, is set to be implemented through 2035 and beyond.
The scheduled launch in February 2027 remains firm, with a Falcon 9 rocket designated to carry the satellite into orbit. Post-deployment, BEACONSAT will continue collecting and analyzing GNSS interference data as part of its mission.
